The recent "Green Alliance: Uniting Lotteries and Suppliers for Sustainability" webinar offered an insightful exploration into the intersection of sustainability and the lottery sector. Hosted on the 5th of March, 2024, the event featured key figures such as Melissa Jacquerioz from the European Lotteries Association, who provided an overview of EL's environmental initiative, and Andrew Jackson, ESG Lead at Scientific Games, who shared detailed practices on emissions reduction and sustainable paper usage within the company.

The webinar included an interview segment where Laura Da Silva, the Sustainability Director at digitalRG, engaged with Andrew Jackson to unravel the complexities and opportunities in enhancing information exchange between suppliers and lotteries to drive sustainability.

Andrew tackled several important inquiries that resonate deeply with organisations aiming to minimise their environmental footprint. Participants were keen to understand how Scientific Games identifies the key impact areas of its operations. Questions like "How do you determine the environmental impact of your paper, ink, and waste management practices?" and "What measures are taken to mitigate waste generated from your operations?" were addressed, highlighting the company's waste diversion and recycling efforts.

Andrew also delved into the specifics of production, with inquiries on the types of paper and ink used and their environmental implications. Andrew shared that Scientific Games employs FSC-certified paper and water-based inks to minimise environmental harm, emphasising the commitment to using resources that have a reduced impact on the planet.

Further, the discussion broadened to cover the variances in environmental practices across different production locations and the importance of uniformity in sustainability standards. Through examples from their Leeds facility, Jackson illustrated how energy efficiency and emission reduction initiatives are tailored to meet local regulations and sustainability goals.

An enlightening aspect of the Q&A was the examination lotteries' RFP (Request for Proposal) requirements, which now include more often essential sustainability queries like emission measurement, reduction plans, targets, and data sharing. These requirements signify a shift towards more environmentally responsible procurement practices, underscoring the importance of transparency and commitment to sustainability in the supply chain.

For those passionate about sustainability and the gaming industry, this webinar serves as a crucial resource. It not only showcases the proactive steps being taken by industry companies like Scientific Games to address environmental challenges but also provides a blueprint for other organisations wishing to embark on a similar journey towards sustainability. It also underscored that is still much more to do.

Laura also showed the resources available to signatories of the EL environmental initiatives such as the carbon measurement tool, the eLearning and support. For more information on these, contact : [email protected] or [email protected]
